An Analysis of the Integration and Implementation of 21st Century Skills to the Values Education Subjects of Grades 1-6 Pupils of Jose Rizal University: Its Impact on Teaching and Learning

Abstract

This research paper analyzes the integration and implementation of the 21st-century skills in the Values Education subjects of Grades 1-6 pupils. Respondents were the 15 Values Education teachers of the Elementary School Division. They were given three surveys:
(a)the 21st-century skills integrated with the Values Education subject were collaboration and creativity as at the top box with 88% of the respondents answered, media literacy and social skills with 81.3%, productivity with 71%, and leadership and technology with 69%.; (b) how the teachers’ support teaching and learning within the scope of 21st-century skills. They scaffold 21st-century skills in their teaching and learning through the full integration of technology/ digital or multimedia tools with 15 responses or at 5.0 weighted mean, the project-based learning with 14 responses or with a 4.7 weighted mean, and the cooperative learning with 13 responses or a weighted mean of 4.33.These were fully implemented by the respondents in their teaching pedagogies to support learning. (c) the type of assessment the teachers used to drive instructions with 21st-century skills are the formative and summative test. They used the digitized quiz with 100% implementation in the formative and 60% implementation in the summative assessment, text entry essays and reflective activity with 86.7% in the formative while in the summative assessment, the text entry essays and reporting and presentation activity were used by two teachers with 13.3 per cent. (d) the impact of the implementation of 21st century skills on teaching and learning was also defined. The respondents answered that its integration and implementation truly widen the horizons of the learners. It levels up students' comprehension and systematically builds students' capabilities and knowledge as they are acquired new skills, and they become more flexible and adaptable to any changes, and were able to develop their leadership skills. The Zone of Proximal Development of Vygotsky (1978) or his constructivism theory stressed the fundamental role of social interaction in the development of cognition, as he believed strongly that community plays a central role in the process of "making meaning." About the trends now and to the call of 21st century, Vygotsky’s Proximal Development theory plays a vital role in the achievement of 21st-century skills like communication, media literacy, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and the like.
